Introduction

Vorfjellet is located northeast of the village Gaupne by Gaupnefjorden - a side arm of Lustrafjorden (in turn a part of Sognefjorden) and belongs to a mountain region defined by Lustrafjorden, Gaupnefjorden and the valleys
Jostedalen, Vigdalen and Dalsdalen. Fivlenosi (1466m) is the highest peak in this region.

The normal starting point is Engjadalen (450m) and this page will describe a Engjadalen - Slettafjellet - Vorfjellet - Heggedalen round trip route (winter). The route via Heggedalen runs through terrain that may be avalanche-prone.

From the summit, you have a good view towards the mountains surrounding Jostedalen, the high peaks between Lustrafjorden and Årdalsfjorden, as well as the Fresvikbreen - Blåskavlen mountain region on the south side of Sognefjorden. And beyond Grånosi - the neighbour peak to the east - you get a good glimpse of some of the mighty Hurrungane peaks.

Access

(all distances are approx. distances)

The nearest bigger town is Sogndal (has an airport). From Sogndal, follow highway RV55 (Sognefjellet, Lom) to the north. At Gaupne (approx. 30km from Sogndal), turn left onto Rådhusvegen. After 200m, continue straight ahead onto Engjadalsvegen. Drive this road 4,7km (stay right in the Gardavegen junction) up to the public parking in Engjadalen (450m).

The route

A winter route often depends on existing tracks, and this is a popular skiing area. See the map (above) or the GPS track on the trip report for a route suggestion. The main direction is northeast, until you gain the ridge south of Jargolane. Then follow the ridge north/northeast across Jargolnipa and Slettafjellet. Arriving on Vorfjellet, you'll pass a trigonometric point 300m west of the high point - marked by a small cairn.

A common descent route is to ski back to point 1133m (approx.) and then descend southeast to Navarsete.

But for a proper round trip, consider descending northeast to the south end of Lake Heggedalsvatnet. This is the saddle point between Vorfjellet and Grånosi. The descent to the Heggedalen cabins is a bit steep (see picture below), and avalanche hazard must be considered. From Heggedalen, follow the main valley down to the trailhead, via Navarsete.
