Introduction

Bjørnøyfjellet and Terøyfjellet (also known as Terøytoppen) are the high points on the islands Bjørnøya and Terøya, located just outside of the place Søvik, on the west side of the Haramlandet peninsula.

Marked paths run up to both tops, excellent as short trips for the family. You also get good views towards Nordøyane (Løvsøya, Haramsøya, Skuløya), Vigra, Valderøya, Ålesund and Ellingsøya.

On Bjørnøya, you also have the option to visit Bjørnøya Kystfort (coastal fort).

Access

From Ålesund, follow highway E136->E39 towards Åndalsnes. From the E136/E39/Olsvika roundabout near Breivka, follow E39 approx. 13,3Km. Turn left onto highway RV661 (Skodje/Brattvåg/Vatne). After 1,5Km, pay toll at an unmanned toll booth (coins + credit cards + AutoPass). Approx. 9,7Km after you left E39, you reach the RV659 (Brattvåg)/661(Vatne) junction. Turn left here. Follow RV659 4,3Km and turn left towards "Søvik/Grytastranda". Drive 17,7Km along this road and turn left towards "Bjørnøya"

Once on Bjørnøya, drive 3,7Km until you see the "Bjørnøya" trailsign. Park here.

An alternative route from Ålesund is to drive via Ellingsøya. The Ellingsøytunnelen toll is (per Jan 2006) NOK 60,- (passenger cars, one person) thus, NOK 30,- more expensive than by driving E39.

The route

Follow the "Bjørnøya" trailsign. Turn left onto a forest path just before you reach a cabin. Follow the vague path (marked by red paint on rocks) up Bjørnøyfjellet's southeast ridge. You pass a couple of humps before you get to the high point, marked by a broken triangulation point.

This is a YDS class 1 route, except from one or two points halfway up, where the path runs across slab rocks. Hands may be needed for balance here. Descend your ascent route.

Access

Same access as for Bjørnøyfjellet above. From the "Søvik/Grytastranda" junction, drive 15,5Km and turn left towards "Terøya". Drive 450-500m, and locate the "Terøytoppen" trailsign just after you entered the island. A tractor road runs up here, and you can park alongside this tractor road.

The route

Follow the tractor road for 100m, then turn right and follow a path (marked by red paint on rocks) up the forest. You go through a gate (or climb across the fence) before you enter the forest, which gets gradually steeper and steeper. You top out at the summit, marked by a triangular point. Descend your ascent route.

An alternative route is the southwest ridge; Continue along the road until you reach a road junction. Turn left and follow the main road to the south side of the island. Pass a 30Km/h zone and follow the road as it curves towards the southwest ridge. You will see a "Terøytoppen" trailsign here.
