Introduction

Storsåta/Nukane are together with the Veten/Høgstefjellet/ Tellevikafjellet/Nordgardsfjellet mountains, the closest mountain available to the people living in and around Åsane.

Moreover, Storsåta is the initial high point on the ridge from Rolland to the Vikinghytten hut, also known as Vardegga.

A number of trails lead up to Storsåta, but the main trail starts at Rolland in Åsane.

Access:

From Bergen, follow E16 towards Åsane. Exit towards Åsane Senter (shopping mall). Go left in the first roundabout and go left in the second roundabout. Immediately after the second roundabout, the road to Rolland (Rollandslia road) exits to the right.

Follow Rollandslia road all the way to the end of the road. There is private parking all over, but you can park at the the school (room for 3-4 cars).

The trail:

Walk towards the mailboxes, and you will see a green sign pointing towards "Vardegga" (cairned ridge). Follow the road upwards. At the top of the hill, turn left by the red barn. There are signs pointing towards the mountain ("Til fjellet").

The trail is quite visible at first, but after a small channel crossing, the trail becomes smaller. It is however possible to follow the trail even if can't be seen. Just watch the vegetation. The trail runs up towards a pass before it turns left and starts to climb up to a view point. As you approach the pass, you start to see cairns marking the trail.

After a steep but short climb up to the view point, the trail turns right (east) up to Nukane high point (373m). From Nukane you see the Storsåta summit further ahead. To get there, you have to descend down to a valley (the descent is less than 100m) and up (under the power line) towards Storsåta summit.

Up towards Storsåta, the trail runs up to the right, so you will have a nice view down towards Jordalen.

From Storsåta, the trail continues on the Vardegga ridge, crossing over Stangelifjellet (418m) and past Ulskebjørnen (443m) before it reaches Vikinghytten hut at 590m. From the hut, one can hike down Jordalsskardet, which gives a long walk on paved roads back to Rolland, if you parked there.

Slettafjellet, 311m

Just before the trail turns north up towards the Nukane pass, you have Slettafjellet to the right. It is a small plateau that does not resemble anything of a mountain. However, it is a named point on the map.

Raunfjellet, 390m

From Storsåta summit, follow the Vardegga ridge down in the south-east direction for 10 minutes and look for a trail that takes you down to Raunfjellet, on your right hand side. Raunfjellet is also a plateau and does not have any significant points. heading

Trip Report Feb 24 2002:

Ain't it typical. On Ulriken, just over the "hill", the sun had been shining all day. Here I was on Storsåta summit, watching the third heavy snowfall whipping over the mountain, since I left the trailhead. The snowfall even carried thunder and lightning, giving the hike some edge to it.

And I could tell I was the first hiker since the last snow came along, as I was plowing snow up to the knees. No trail for a small dog. Backpack time again for him.

However, I was blessed with 10 sunny minutes on top of Storsåta, allowing me to take some nice pictures. It was not in the cards to proceed on the ridge that day. Instead, I drove to the city and enjoyed a nice hike in sunny weather up Ulriken. And the trail was already broken, so Troll could get his "daily" excercise.
