Steindalsnosi (2025m) on skis, Apr 30 2012 |

It was the finest weekend so far this spring, and the day before Anne Rudsengen and me skied across Steindalseggi - an incredible fine (and long) round trip. Today (Apr 30), we wanted a restitution day. Steindalsnosi on Sognefjellet came up as a good restitution candidate... It's a beautiful drive from Sogndal to Sognefjellet, and we enjoyed every second of it - with the roof down of course. And I felt good vibrations as we passed Turtagrø. Mighty peaks appeared in front of us...

We found a spot alongside the road, parked the car and headed out 11am sharp. I was slightly worried that we had started bit early and that the snow in the steepest part would be icy. But there were several skiers ahead of us, and I assumed that a) they knew what they were doing and b) that the sun would do its job within the next hours. The first challenge was however to get going...
![]() A fun start
Next followed a nice, but uneventful plod up towards Steindalsnosi. I was counting 10 skiers ahead of us, and there were most likely a few more on the summit. As we were approaching the steepest section, we could see that some chose to deal with the upper section on foot. I was curious about exactly how steep this section was...
The big hillside
The upper section wasn't too bad, and the main track was a motorway. We now had only 0,5km to the summit point, and could enjoy first class seats to the mighty Hurrungane mountain range.
Mighty Hurrungane
We reached the top of Steindalsnosi 12:37pm - almost at the same time with the others that had been ahead of us. Even if I knew exactly what we could see from up there, the view was still breathtaking. We should have more restitution days like this...
On top of Steindalsnosi
We didn't quite look forward to the descent. It was true - it was a bit too early in the day and the snow was hard and icy. All the tracks made skiing in the upper section really difficult. A long string of skiers were on their way upwards, and I had to tell myself a couple of times that it was OK to look silly. But a bit further down, conditions improved dramatically, and we could finally enjoy some nice skiing...
Descending from Steindalsnosi
We returned to the trailhead 1:35pm and had a nice drive down from Sognefjellet. We went to Gaupne to visit friends and we made the barbeque dinner just in time... A very nice end to a mighty fine day...
