Norwegian Mountains, Møre og RomsdalAfter-dark skiing on Skafjellet (573m), Feb 2 2010Back to the main Skafjellet page.
An unusual amount of snow has fallen on Søre Sunnmøre lately. The popular routes are even more popular, as no one wants to break trails up to their knees in snow. One of these routes runs from Bigset and up Skafjellet, and I assumed that chances were good for finding new or old tracks up the forest road and possibly the mountain. I invited my colleague Rune Olsen to come along. Rune was also my hiking mate on my first visit to this mountain - almost two years earlier. We .. kind of .. had expected moonlight, but didn't get any. Thus, once we left the forest road we didn't know exactly where Skafjellet was. But we chose a direction which led us straight to the summit. A million (or more) stars painted the sky above us. Magic! The last time we were up here, Rune petted my (former) dog Troll on the summit cairn. Today, there was another "creature" present...
The best part was however yet to come - the descent. The slope angle was perfect and the snow was .. heavenly. I might just go back up tomorrow..
