I hadn't been on a..

Hareidlandet top in a long time. I had already completed my primary factor-based mountain list for Hareid. Now it was time to look beyond the list. I decided to begin with Skafjellet. As my colleague Rune Olsen lives just beneath the mountain, it was natural to ask if he wanted to come along. Rune is a man of the mountains. I would be visiting Skafjellet with a certified glacier guide. I felt safe...

Come rain come shine

According to the weather forecast, it would stop raining somewhere between 16:00 and 18:00PM. I interpolated this to 17:00PM, which meant that if we left Bigset 16:00PM, we would arrive the top one hour later and the weather would have settled. In the mountain business, optimism is mandatory. As we drove from work in Ulsteinvik, it was pouring down. But beauty of the term shower is the fact that it will eventually go away.

We left Rune's house on schedule and headed up the forest road. The weather had settled and there would be no more rain. My dog Troll kept us company from my backpack. He had been doing a lot of walking lately, and deserved some rest.

Skafjellet

On the mountain path, we ran into snowfields with partly rotten snow. The higher we got, lesser snow. Wind country. We reached the top 17:05PM, as good as according to plan. The good new-top-in-the-bag sensation came instantly. Rune had been up here numerous times, but being an outdoor type of guy, he enjoyed the day as well. Rune is good company and although this was our first walk, it won't be our last.

We didn't linger for long. After a round of pictures, we headed back down. A short-cut made Troll struggle with the Hareidlandet turfs, but soon we were back on the path. We were back at the trailhead 18:05PM, and I was in good shape for the 18:30PM ferry.
