Norwegian Mountains, Møre og RomsdalSaudehornet, July 15 2006To the main Saudehornet page This beautiful Saturday certainly invited for a longer day in the mountains, but I decided to (finally) visit Saudehornet, which had been on my wish-list for months. I knew it would be a fairly short hike, but then there is also 3 hours of driving (in total).. I had no problems locating the trailhead, and the dog and I were on our way 10:05AM. A couple of senior citiziens were trekking up and down the service road, but it seemed apparent (by the number of cars in the parking) that there was no one ahead of me on the mountain path. It was an amazingly hot day, and I regretted the choice of woollen clothes. Troll had walked up the service road, and from the cabin up to the Saudehornet - Vallahornet ridge. I decided to carry him up the steep slopes below Saudehornet. I noticed that another hiker (in a good pace) came up from the cabin. With little less to do than walking, I decided that this hiker should not catch up with me. It was a strenuous walk up the ridge, but we arrived the summit 11:55AM. About right on "schedule", considering the extra weight and slower pace (dog). To my surprise, the summit was freezing cold, and I had to put on a hat, gloves and the wind-jacket. I had been looking forward to - finally - getting a "front-row" seat towards Vassdalstinden, but on this gorgeous day, valley fog drifted up between Saudehornet and Vassdalstinden. I will not be surprised if I learned that this was the ONLY place on Sunnmøre, where there was valley fog. The other hiker (a woman) arrived the summit 12:15PM and was a little uneasy about being up here. She told me that she would not have gone up, if it wasn't for the hiker she could see in front of her. She had been here several times, but found the upper part a bit scary. She didn't want to be the last one on the mountain, and left before me. I quickly caught up with her and decided to keep her company down the mountain. She seemed to appreciate that. We parted near Vallahornet. Several other hikers were on the way up the mountain, and I chatted with a couple. Further down the valley, the dog and I gave room for a runner, probably training for the "Saudehornet rett opp" contest in August. He was the only person not smiling, and I wondered if he enjoyed the mountain as much as the rest of us. We were back at the trailhead 13:40PM. I considered another top, but ended up by taking an evening trip to Sukkertoppen to collect a few slings I had left there a few days ago. Besides, a hard trip across Emdalstindane was awaiting the next day. I'd better save my strengths.
