Introduction

Ryptinden (Grouse Peak) is one of the higher tops on the Sømnahalvøya peninsula. Lysingen (648m) is the highest top, succeeded by Grøndalsfjellet (620m), Sæterfjellet (599m) and Ryptinden. Between Ryptinden (586m) and Kråkneshesten, you will see an unnamed top - map point 587m. On Økonomisk Kartverk, this top is named Ryptinden, while the actual Ryptinden is named Hestfjellet. This may be a map error. As the two tops are so close, they are referred to as Ryptinden W (586m) and Ryptinden E (586m) on this web page. Økonomisk Kartverk (the primary source for westcoastpeaks.com) states that the western top is 586m and the eastern top is 585,57m ~ 586m. To calculate the primary factor, we have to nominate one of the tops as the higher, which will be the western top. Also in line with the 1:50,000 map (587m).

The route described on this web page does not follow the established trails to the mountain. The route is an off-trail round trip from Kvervet, across the Ryptinden tops and Kråknesfjellet. From Kråkneshesten, you also have the option to extend your hike across Storfjellet and Trælneshatten.

Another access route to Ryptinden is from Veddal. You follow the trail towards Sæterfjellet, up the ridge leading to Lake Nedresæterstigvatnet. As you pass the 480m contour, head southwest across Grønskardet pass, opposed to southeast towards Sæterfjellet. There is *possibly* (not verified) a path up Ryptinden's south ridge (Hestfjellet on the map) and *possibly* a path from the forest roads near Kvervet and up to the pass between Kråkneshesten and Ryptinden W (587m).

Ryptinden East is located on the Brønnøy/Sømna kommune border, while Ryptinden West (Point 587m) and Kråkneshesten are located in Brønnøy kommune.

Primary factor:

Ryptinden W (Norge 1:50,000: 587m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 586m, UTM 33 W 374351 7258484) has a primary factor of 163m, towards the higher parent Sæterfjellet (599m). The saddle (approx. 33 W 375711 7258795) is found in Grønskardet, between Ryptinden and Sæterfjellet. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is within the range 420-425m, interpolated to 423m.

Ryptinden E (Norge 1:50,000: 585m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 585,57m ~ 586m, UTM 33 W 374799 7258154) has a primary factor of 68m, towards the higher parent Ryptinden W (586m). The saddle (approx. 33 W 374574 7258256) is found on Sletta (ØK) between the two tops. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is within the range 515-520m, interpolated to 518m.

Kråkneshesten (Norge 1:50,000: 558m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 558,26m, UTM 33 W 373072 7258507) has a primary factor of 145m, towards the higher parent Ryptinden W (586m). The saddle (approx. 33 W 373877 7259055) is found N of Lake 402m (Hoplivatnet). Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is within the range 410-415m, interpolated to 413m.

Access

(All distances are approx.)

From Brønnøysund, follow RV17 eastbound to Skillvika. Continue 17,6Km in the direction of Vennesund. Turn left towards Dalbotn. Drive 3,5Km and turn left onto an unsigned road just before the road crosses a creek. Follow the main road 1,2Km towards the Kvervet farm. Park here.

Note: At Forlian, 300m before Kvervet, you will see a couple of forest roads. One of these forest roads have red paint, suggesting a marked trail. As the forest road curves and comes back around, there may be a trail that forks, and leads you up to Lake 402m (Hoplivatnet). This has not been verified (yet).

The route

Ryptinden E+W:

Follow the forest road 1,3Km to the Lidarende cabin. Pass the cabin to the left and aim for an opening (a channel...) up the forest. Pass the denser forest on the east side and aim for a small, steep valley between the two Ryptinden tops. This is steep forest at times (toes, not heels), but the terrain is easy enough. You top out between the two Ryptinden tops. Turn right and head up to the eastern top. The cairn (with a container, and possibly a visitor register) is located 70m southwest of the high point.

Descend your ascent route back to the Sletta pass (Grønlihalsen on the 1:50,000 map) and head up to the more broken-up terrain on the western Ryptinden top. You pass a minor top before you reach the highest (unmarked) point.

Kråkneshesten:

From Ryptinden's western top, head northwest and pass the 540m contour to the right. Then find a good route down to Lake 402m (Hoplivatnet). Head up Kråkneshesten's north ridge and to the solid summit cairn, which holds a container and possibly a visitor register.

Descent:

Here you have a lot of options. If you want a rapid descent, head south towards point 281m. You might come across a path down this ridge. Before you reach point 281m, turn southeast and aim for the trailhead. You cross two forest roads (or it might just be one, coming back around) and have to find your way through easy forest here and there.
