Romsskåla is the highest point in Leka municipality, and the highest point on Austra island - 40km southwest of Brønnøysund. The Nordland - Nord-Trøndelag county border runs across the summit. The mountain appears gently when seen from most sides, but has a more rugged appearance towards the west. The mountain can be reached on several routes, and this page will describe a fun off-trail round trip from Nord-Gutvika.
Once in this area, you can also check out the Litj Bindalskjerja and Svartomnen grottos. From Sør-Gutvika, you can also take the ferry to Leka and visit (a.o.) Lekamøya - a well-known rock feature with the appropriate associated myths... Search the internet for more information.
Romsskåla (Norge 1:50,000: 588m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 588,42m, UTM 32 V 310568 6905717) has a primary factor of 191m, being the highest point on Austra island.
GPS measurement read 590m (on the ground), averaged over a 5-minute period (error margin +/- 2m).

Route 1: Nord-Gutvika - Romsskåla round trip (summer/autumn)
|
|
This route description is valid per July
2010
Access
(all distances are approx. distances)
The starting point is Nord-Gutvika on the island Austra. From RV17 at Kjeleidet, turn left on highway RV802. Drive 5,6km to Bogen, turn right, drive 150m (meters) across a bridge and turn right again. Follow the road to Sør-Gutvika 13,2km and turn right at a fork near Gutvikvågen. Follow the gravel road 6km to Øvergård, turn right for the last time, drive 500m, turn left and find parking by Osen 250m up the road (N65.12368 E11.88964).
The route
Head west towards the nearest house, which you pass on the left-hand side. There is a gate in the backyard, and you can follow a vague path from here. The path takes you up to the Liss-bindalsaksla ridge, and you will pass an exposed point on your way up to the ridge. Once on the ridge, the route becomes easier. The ridge is a bit narrow on top, so exercise caution, especially if you hike close to the Litlbindalen side.
Once on the mountain proper, keep
heading east towards Romsskåla's west
ridge. To gain this ridge, pick the easiest route - or scramble up a series
of small ledges. Fun!
Continue up to the summit (N65.12662 E11.93605), marked by a
proper cairn.
Descend southwest via
Holdåsfjellet and aim for
Stobindalsaksla - just west of lake 195m. Follow this ridge northwest and
pass several cute clefts
along the way. As you reach the forest, stay to the left of the forest and aim
for the trailhead.
