Introduction

Rødlandstua and Utvikfjellet are the prominent points on the long forest ridge located on the north side of Lake Brusdalsvatnet outside Ålesund. Well worn paths take you to the top of Rødlandstua from Lake Brusdalsvatnet (south) or from Høyvika bay (north). The path from the Utvika-Brusdal road to Utvikfjellet is less pronounced.

You will find a triangulation marker on Rødlandstua summit and you will get some good views, especially towards the Haram and Skodje mountains. There is also a mailbox that -may- contain a visitor register. On some tops, the logbooks are collected late autumn.

On the GPS map, Rødlandstua is named Rollandstua. As such, a number of pictures have Rollandstua on them. The correct name seems to be Rødlandstua, although no place named Rødland (or Rolland for that matter) is found in this region.

Primary factor:

Rødlandstua (Norge 1:50,000: 355m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 354,58m, UTM 32 V 369639 6931215) has a primary factor of 287m towards the higher parent mountain Ursfjellet (563m) The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 374949 6930208) is found at the east end of Lake Brusdalvatnet, and south of point 124m. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is within the 70-65m contours, interpolated to 68m.

Utvikfjellet (Norge 1:50,000: - Ø.K.: -, GPS: 253m, UTM 32 V 372201 6931834) has a primary factor of 100m towards the higher parent mountain Rollandstua (355m) The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 371346 6931286) is found between Rollandstua and Utvikfjellet. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is within the 150-155m contours, interpolated to 153m.

The height has been set to 253m because the trig. point (251,68m) is clearly not the high point on this ridge. It is however not easy to determine the exact point.

From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Åndalsnes. Near Breivika, follow sign towards Olsvika. From the Ålesund/Åndalsnes/Olsvika/Lerstad roundabout by Plantasjen (not the roundabout on E39!), follow the Olsvika road for approx. 6Km. When you see a "(!)Gardstun" roadsign and a turnout (holds 3 cars) on the left-hand side of the road, then park at the turnout.

The route

Cross the road and follow a forest path that begins by the "Gardstun" sign. After approx. 550m, you arrive at a path junction. Turn left towards Smådalen (signed), and follow a path that is marked with blue plastic bands on the trees. The path climbs to Svartevatnet's west side and continues up Rødlandstua's west ridge.

There is one or two points, from the lake and upwards, that may require hands for support. Still not enough to upgrade the path from YDS class 1. Parts of the route can be boggy and wet.

From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Åndalsnes. From the E16/E39/Olsvika roundabout near Breivka, follow E39 9,1Km and turn left towards "Brusdal". You enter a 3-way junction. Go straight ahead and follow a gravel road 1,4-1,5Km. You have parking for 2-3 cars on your right-hand side and a forest ridge marked by a blue ribbon on your left.

The route

Follow the blue ribbon path approx. 750m until you reach the "Rollandstua/Storegga" trailsign. Turn right and head northeast 100m before turning north->northwest. Follow the top of the ridge up to the broken trig. point that marks point 252m. You will see that the ridge is slightly higher westbound, but there is no particular point that stands out.
