Introduction

Varden/Storevarden (The cairn/The big cairn) is the highest point on Nerlandsøya island, located just southwest of Runde. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk map, this top is also known as Nerlandshornet, although the M711 map states that Nerlandshornet is a point 500m north of Storevarden.

1,6Km southwest of Storevarden, you will find Rjåhornet, providing a good view towards Keipen on the Skorpa island. You can get to Rjåhornet on path from Storevarden. Getting to Storevarden is easy; you follow a service road up to 210m elevation and continue a very well marked path.

On the top you will also find a large building with transmitting equipment. You will see a sign recommending you to stay away from the antennas, for your own safety and health.

Primary factor:

Storvarden (Norge 1:50,000: 430m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 430,17m, UTM 32 V 321786 6917917) has a primary factor of 430m being the highest point on Nerlandsøya island.

Rjåhornet (Norge 1:50,000: 419m, Økonomisk Kartverk: Highest contour = 420m (interpolated to 421m), UTM 32 V 320550 6916908) has a primary factor of 68m towards the higher parent Storevarden (430m). The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 320926 6917424) is found between these two tops. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (50m contours), the saddle is within the range 350-355m, interpolated to 353m.

GPS measurement read 425m (on the ground), averaged over a 5-minute period (error margin not recorded).

Access

The nearest larger city is Ålesund. From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Bergen, and then RV61 towards Hareid. Take the Sulesund - Hareid ferry and follow RV61 (roughly) 3Km towards Ulsteinvik. At the roundabout junction outside Ulsteinvik, turn left and follow RV61 southbound until you turn right when you see the "Måløy" sign. Once on Gurskøya, follow highway RV564 all the way to Fosnavåg.

Continue towards Nerlandsøya (signed). At the "Kvalsvik/Koparstad" junction, Turn right towards Kvalsvik. Drive 500m and locate a road (unsigned) that runs up to your left. You should already have seen the mountain service road switchback up the hillside by now. Turn left here, drive 50m and find parking. The total distance from Hareid to the trailhead is approx. 43,5Km.

The route

Follow the service road up to 210m elevation where you see a number of poles in the direction of Storevarden. This is the path. Leave the road here and follow the poles all the way to the building on top and the summit cairn.

Note that there are several shortcuts that can be made along the service road. Descend your ascent route, or continue towards Rjåhornet and descend via Hestinghornet.
