Liafjellet is a forest hill located just west-southwest of Osøyro. A number of excellent trails have been prepared, marked by Os Turlag. The trails can be found on the map "Veg- og Turkart" (Roadmap/Tourist information), published by Os kommune. This web page will describe one of the trails - an approach from the south (Thuen/Tuven).
From the summit cairn, you have good views towards Tysnes, Stord, Austevoll and Strøno. All views in other directions are blocked by forest. Liafjellet is nevertheless a popular forest hill, very accessible and convenient for the people living near Osøyro.
Liafjellet (M711: 259m, Ø.K: 258,70m) has a primary factor of 200m towards the higher Ulvenfjellet (316m). The saddle is found on an airplane field between the two tops. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), I have chosen the fixed point 58,6m ~ 59m as the saddle point.

The trails described below are not necessarily the *easiest* trails to this mountain.

From Bergen, follow highway E39 southbound towards Stavanger. Drive through Osøyro. Approx. 3Km before Halhjem (ferry), turn right at the "Buarøy/Lepsøy" junction. Follow this road for 1Km (turn left in the first junction) and locate a gravel road that runs steep upwards to your right. If you see the trailsign "Liafjellet" just up the road, you've found the beginning of the trail. Find parking nearby. A small turnout (3 cars) on the left hand side of the road may be a possibility.
Follow the gravel road upwards until you reach a junction. Go right. Approx. 100m later, leave the gravel road and enter a forest trail on your right. Follow this trail (you can follow it in the thickest fog) to the top. Along the way you will pass two gates. Close them behind you. The trail runs north-northeast until it merges with the trail from Mobergslia. Go left (west) in this junction. The trail junctions are also signed.
It had been 4 days without hiking due to a leg injury, and Liafjellet was the perfect place to check if the leg was healing. I had dropped my camera below Matrenipa a few days earlier, and brought along my new Canon EOS300D (which is an old camera by now). It turned out that most of my shots from this hike were taken in medium resolution, because Canon seems to have different resolution settings per program. Oh well. Now I know.
It was a nice hike on a nice trail. Me and the dog headed out 19:00PM and reached the top 19:40PM after taking it nice and easy upwards. On the top, I chatted with Sissel and her friend. We headed down the same way and reached the car 20:15PM.
