The municipality of Volda has some mighty fine peaks, and most people would agree that Keipen is among the very finest - at least when viewed from the Bjørkedalen side. It's hard to forget the sight of a perfectly formed pyramid, reflecting in the Lake Bjørkedalsvatnet...
The mountain is popular all year around, although it's not known as one of the best tops for skiing. But if you can endure a few minor cumbersome sections in the lower forest, you can have a very memorable day on Keipen!

Route 1: Straumshamn - Keipen (winter - on skis)
|
|
Access
(all distances are approx. distances)
The starting point for this route description is Volda. Take the Volda - Folkestad ferry and follow highway E39 7,7km to the bridge at Straumshamn. After the bridge, take left in the fork (N62.06670 E6.06729 - signposted Fyrde/Austefjord) and drive 1,7km. You see a road going upwards on your right-hand side (N62.05589 E6.08346). This is the road to Litledalsvatnet.
This toll road is not ploughed in winter, but you can drive up to the nearest house and ask for permission to park there (N62.05509 E6.08607).
The route
Follow the road up to Litledalsvatnet (1,5km). Look for the "Keipen" signpost and find the best route up the forest. Look for old ski-tracks. Continue west/southwest up the forest ridge and across Heida. Aim for a distinct valley that begins at approx. 560 meters. Find the best route upwards until you reach the ridge leading up to the summit (N62.03207 E6.06855) - marked by a small cairn.
