Trip report, Sep 3 2006

After having been city-bound for a week (on-duty call), I hoped that this Sunday's weather would be good. I had my mind set on a fine peak in the Ørsta region. But I woke up to the sound of rain, and the visual weather check revealed foggy mountains. Oh well, a rainy and foggy day is always a good excuse for getting other things done.

But as the day went by, I needed to at least take a walk. I had been "saving" Haugfjellet for a rainy day, and I called my colleague Torill. She lives nearby and could be sitting on useful information regarding the forest roads. She had just returned from the local mountain Nihusen, but wanted to come along. She had never been to Haugfjellet, and a rainy day was a good opportunity to spend some time up there.

We met in Skodje, aiming to drive up to Apalviksætra. But this road was closed by a locked gate and we drove up to Fyllingsvatnet. Although we could drive all the way to Skodjestølen, we decided to park down by the road to Engsetdal. My dog "Troll" could surely use some exercise, and a forest road is convenient for a (soon) 13-years old dachshund.

We left the parking 14:12PM and fortunately, it wasn't raining. At Skodjestølen, we had no problems following the forest path towards Apalvikstætra. At Apalvikstætra (14:55PM) we found that the path continued eastbound (north of the cabins) and joined a tractor road east of the cabins. The tractor road seemed to head in the right direction (towards Haugfjellet) and we followed it to its end.

With Troll in the backpack, we headed off-trail up to Høgnosa (15:27PM), where we tried to establish the elevation. The estimate was 366-367m and we continued eastbound to Haugfjellet (15:40PM) where we concluded that Haugfjellet was 1-2m higher than Høgnosa. Upon returning, we crossed a meadow and joined our ascent route a bit further down in the forest. Troll started walking again by the meadow, and walked all the way back to the trailhead (16:47PM). A nice 2,5h, 7,5Km hike was over, and I could "tick off" yet another top on my Ørskog list.
