Grødet/Otrefjellet seen from Utvikfjellet

Introduction

Grødet and Otrefjellet are located in the southwest corner of the mountain region that is dominated by Blåskjerdingen (1069m) and defined by fjords and the road between Vatne and Fiksdal. Although the views are not quite as good as from the higher neighbour Blåskjerdingen, identifying all of the tops you see from Grødet should keep you busy for a while.

The mountains are located on opposite sides of Lake Ulvestadvatnet. Grødet is easily reached via the forest road towards Ulvestadvatnet, and then along a path up the south flank. Another nice route runs via Hovsetsætra and these two routes allow for the perfect round trip hike.

Otrefjellet has also a path from Ulvestadvatnet and up to the summit. The mountain has a spectactular gap at approx. 550m elevation on the south ridge. The ridge seems to breaking up, and you will see other, smaller gaps along the ridge. Show EXTREME caution when walking this ridge on rotten snow. In spring, especially. This warning is valid for the ridge all the way from point 519m and up to the summit.

Kollen is a small hill with a nice view towards Vatnefjorden. There may be a forest path on the south ridge, but it is fairly trivial to reach (off-trail) via the north ridge.

Primary factor:

Grødet (Norge 1:50,000: -, Ø.K.: 692,7m ~ 693m, UTM 32 V 379457 6940409) has a primary factor of 360m towards the higher parent mountain Blåskjerdingen (1169m). The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 381399 6941779) is found north of lakes Vestrevatna. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is within the range 330m-335m, interpolated to 333m.

Note: Trig. point 684m (683,86m) on Norge 1:50,000 map is not the summit point.

Otrefjellet (Norge 1:50,000: 629m, Ø.K.: 626,1m, UTM 32 V 380941 6941049) has a primary factor of 203m towards the higher parent mountain Grødet (693m). The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 380423 6941005) is found north of Lake Ulvestadvatnet. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is within the range 420m-425m, interpolated to 423m.

Kollen (Norge 1:50,000: 198m, Ø.K.: highest contour is 195m, UTM 32 V 377822 6939510) has a primary factor of 65m towards the higher parent mountain Grødet (693m). The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 377965 6939652) is found between Kollen and Grødet. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is within the range 130-135m, interpolated to 133m.

The routes described on this page

Route 1: Vatne - Grødet via Ulvestadsætra (summer/autumn)

Difficulty : Class 1 (YDS)

From Ålesund, follow highway E136->E39 towards Åndalsnes. From the E136/E39/Olsvika roundabout near Breivka, follow E39 approx. 13,3Km. Turn left onto highway RV661 (Skodje/Brattvåg/Vatne). After 1,5Km, pay toll at an unmanned toll booth (coins + credit cards + AutoPass). Approx. 9,7Km after you left E39, you reach the RV659 (Brattvåg)/661(Vatne) junction.

Turn right and follow RV661 2,1Km to the Vestnes junction in Vatne. Do not turn left towards Vestnes, but drive 100m in the direction of Fiksdal and then turn left. Follow this road 480m and turn right onto a narrow road that runs upwards in the southeast direction.

After 200m, the road forks. Turn left and drive 600m up to the parking area. The forest road to Ulvestadvatnet is closed by a gate.

The route

Follow the forest road to 1,3Km until this road ends. A smaller forest road continues from here. Follow this road 500m upwards and locate a vague tractor road that forks to the left. After 100m, look for the forest path that forks to the left. Once you've found the path, it's well marked and visible and takes you safely up Grødet's south flank.

It's amazing that since a marked path run across the entire mountain, it's so hard to find in the beginning. Consider descending Route #3 (below) as your descent route.

Same as for route #1 above.

The route

Follow the forest road to 1,3Km until this road ends. A smaller forest road continues from here. Follow this road 760m toward Lake Ulvestadvatnet. You'll see the entire ridge as you approach the lake. Before you reach the lake, cross the stream where you see red paint on rocks. After massive rain and snowmelt, this stream *could* be awkward to cross.

Follow the path up to point 519m and then along the ridge up to the summit cairn. The ridge is extremely broken up a bit south of the summit. You can pass this section on the west side.

There are also other, smaller gaps on the Otrefjellet ridge. If the ground is covered with snow, show extreme caution.

The route

The trailhead is 50 further up the road, and is signed Hovsetsætra. Two gravel roads lead up to two houses. Follow the rightmost one. Before you reach the house, you'll see the forest road.

Follow the forest road up to the meadow between Kollen and Grødet. Follow the forest/tractor road towards a creek. The forest path begins on the other side of the creek. Make sure you find it.

Follow the path up the ridge (Kaldkleiva). The ridge path is visible and easy to follow. At 400m (above the forest), you'll see a small trail fork. Turn right and proceed along the ridge to Hovsetsætra. Continue up to Lake Hovsetvatna and turn east/southeast and follow the markers up to the Grødet summit cairn.

Consider descending route #1 (above) via Ulvestadsætra. This round trip is highly recommended!
