Introduction

Eikenakken is the highest point on Eika island, located in Ulstein kommune, just south of Eiksund. The new tunnel that connects Ørsta and Hareidlandet will have its western entrance/exit on this island. The tunnel is scheduled to be opened in the autumn of 2007.

As this top was visited during the tunnel construction work early 2007, the route description provided below, will probably not be valid when the new tunnel opens up.

Primary factor:

Eikenakken (Norge 1:50,000: 123m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 122.84m, UTM 32 V 338388 6904785) has a primary factor of 123m, being the high point on Eika island.

Access

From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Bergen, and then RV61 towards Hareid. Take the Sulesund - Hareid ferry and follow RV61 almost all the way to the Eiksund ferry, south of Ulsteinvik. Turn right onto a bridge, approx. 500m before the ferry. Cross the bridge, and follow a construction road upwards. Turn right in the first junction, and follow a rough road until it ends. Do not park at the turn-around zone.

The route

Follow a tractor road in the southwest direction. Pass a couple of cabins/houses, and (very) soon after the road turns southbound, and you have a small lake on your right, leave the road and head off-trail up along a forest ridge. The high point is marked by a small building and an antenna. Descend your ascent route, or head northeast and descend a steep gully that will take you back onto the tractor road.
