Introduction

"Gulen mountains" is the name I use for the mountains in the area north of Fensfjorden/Masfjorden, south of Sognefjorden and and west of highway E39. These mountains are probably frequently traveled by local people, but the Stølsheimen mountain range that begins on the east side of highway E39 is more likely to receive the attention of the average hiker.

The highest mountain in this area, is Brosviksåta, 722m. See also description of hiking Øksefjellet nearby.

Access:

Take highway E39 north from Bergen. Cross the Nordhordalandsbrua bridge over the Osterfjord (The toll is currently NOK 45,-). At Knarvik, 3-5 minutes later, exit onto highway 57 towards Leirvåg. When you arrive Leirvåg approx. 40 minutes later, take the ferry over to Sløvåg. From Sløvåg go straight ahead until you reach the first major junction, then exit left towards Rutledal. After approx. 15-20 minutes, you arrive Dalsøyra. At the junction, exit right towards Dalsbygda. Pass the school and follow the road upwards until the road Y-forks. Go left, pass a couple of houses, and when you're done with the uphill, and see a small old bridge on your right, then find a place to park.

Notes:

Hiking in January, I didn't find the trail down after leaving Norddalsstølen cabin at the top of the river. The trip down was rather strenuous, but I picked up the trail after 10 minutes, and made it safely down through the forest. The round-trip was a quick walk in snow, 3 hours all together (9km).

The trail:

Next to the old bridge, you see a old red house. Begin ascending Slengesholkletten ridge from here (slightly visible trail), and you are on the way to Dalsfjellet summit at 574m. From here, descend down in the north-east direction to the summit of Kvitefjellet (512m).

From Kvitefjellet, walk over to Kariløa (495m). From here, head south-west towards the Norddalsstølen cabin and follow the river down through Dalsdalen valley. In summer, you should be able to find a trail down through the valley.
