Berstadhornet from Mannseidet, Jan 29 2012 |
To the main Berstadhornet & Eidshornet page (maps, pictures, other trip reports) My route, as seen in Google Earth
This was a gorgeous Sunday at the end of January, and normally I would have gone skiing somewhere (like the day before - to Vikesandfjellet above Syvden). But the local mountains offered snow of the icy sort, and I had my share of that the day before... Instead, I sat course towards Selje and Berstadhornet - one of the few tops I had not yet visited in this area. I took the "usual" 10:45am ferry from Årvika to Koparneset. A late and lazy morning combined with a couple of new tops is my kind of weekend...
The ferry arrives at Årvika
The drive from Koparnes towards Selje is always nice, and today was no exception. The Syvdsalpane peaks were stunning like always. After 40-45 minutes, I arrived at Mannseidet - my starting point. Parking opportunities were limited, so I had to park in a curve further down the road. 11:35am, I was on my way up the mountain.
On the way to Berstadhornet
I was sort of already thinking about my second top for the day - and wherever that could be. Nausane on Sandvikseidet (Stadlandet) perhaps? That's typical me. How about focusing on the top I am heading towards? No, that's just futile thinking, so I decided to keep a good pace to make sure there was time for a second top. Just as I took the above picture, I noticed two hikers halfway up the snowy ridge to the right. Cool! I set my mind on overtaking them before reaching the top. There's nothing like good motivation! (I still insist that I'm not a ...(cough)... competitive guy)...
Catching up with two hikers
I caught up with Sølvi and Per Årvik in the final hill. They had obviously spotted me, because they made comments about my pace. Words I like to hear .... We (more or less) kept company the last part up to the summit, on which I arrived at 12:25pm - 50 minutes after leaving the trailhead. Sølvi and Per - arriving on Berstadhornet
The wiew was great from up here, but on the other hand - have I really been to many tops along the coastline where the view has not been great? Hmm...
Syvdsalpane seen from Berstadhornet
By now, I had decided that I would go to Nausane on Stadlandet, so I said goodbye to Sølvi and Per and hurried down the mountain. It felt like a crime to be rushing on a gorgeous day such as this one, but I found it in my heart to forgive myself... The mountain was a bit more "crowded" now; more hikers were on their way up and some were returning from Tua. I returned to my car 1pm and was on my way to Stadlandet one minute later...
Next stop - Stadlandet
