Norwegian Mountains, Møre og RomsdalMuletua and steep terrain, June 22 2011To the main Muletua page (maps, route descriptions, other trip reports, etc.)
On May 22 2009, Vidar and me attempted to descend Muletua to the west and reach Mulevika along the shore. We didn't make it, and on this nice afternoon in June 2011 - I decided to return to Nerlandsøya and explore the coastline from Mulevika. Perhaps there was a route that we had missed? I followed the shoreline until I ran into cliffs, rising steeply up from the sea. From a distance, I could see a vague track 50 meters (?) above the shore and I decided to see where the path took me. It was really cool to be way above the sea birds - here represented by a small colony of Cormorants. I hoped that my presence would go unnoticed and moved quietly. They didn't seem to notice me.
Above the Cormorants
The route led me back to the shoreline, and now I was in a really, really rugged landscape. I had to actively look for a way to advance, although I didn't have to look very hard.
Rugged terrain ahead
As I reached the "bay" below the 3 ridges it was clear that I couldn't make it over to Muletua's west ridge. But what about the ridge directly above me? I could see a number of ledges and some discomforting terrain a bit higher up. Now that I was here, I better had to take a look...
View up the ridge
I soon ran into vertical terrain on the ridge, and started looking for a route up in the grassy hillside on the inside of the ridge. Clearly, it was possibly to advance from here, but not without taking risks. As I was not in the risk-seeking business this afternoon, I decided to return the way I came.
Admitting defeat
I returned to Mulevika and decided to visit the summit along an easier route, and hiked up a steep boulder section. But once on the plateau, I got too curious and went over to ridge that I had given up on a little while ago. The descent went well and for a little while I actually thought that I could make it all the way down...
But 5 meters above the point I had turned around earlier, I ran into a full stop. I was NOT able to proceed without taking a considerable risk. Locals might know some clever moves here, but I didn't have any more time to spend on this mountain this evening. I headed back up the ridge and could finally enjoy the nice view from the summit. Only time will show if I'm done with the Muletua cliffs...
