After a wonderful period with moonlight and a starry sky, it was time for .. something else. Exactly what is hard to say, because lately, "everything" seemed to come down from the sky. Cats & dogs included. On this Sunday just before Christmas, it was mostly rain. My main goal was to turn 99 New Mountains into 100 (ref. my hiking log), which was my second goal for the year. The first - 100,000 vertical meters had already been met.

I decided to visit Barmen - one of the two Herøy independent tops that I still hadn't been to. While at it, it only seemed natural to also visit Muletua. The wind and the rain didn't bother me much, but I couldn't take the pictures that I wanted to. Which wasn't a big issue, anyway. There wasn't much to see behind the rain showers. On my way upwards, I could see a hiker high on Muletua. A bit later, I noticed that there was a small cabin near the top.

Inside the cabin - or shelter - sat a guy from Kvalsvik, and I got some interesting information about the area. He was one of the guys who rebuilt the Muletua cabin, after the Jan 1 1992 hurricane tore it down. Soon after, his brother arrived. They were heading for Barmen, and I decided to tag along. But first, I had to visit the summit. I noticed a westbound path that just dropped "into the ocean". Very interesting. I will certainly be back to check it out.

My fellow hikers seemed to have done all the interesting cliff routes on this side of the island. Some of the routes seemed to be a bit "borderline". Trollråsa has many cousins out here. My fellow hikers also pointed out the Geitmaren reef, on which the 14,000 ton tanker Arisan grounded (and then sunk) during the Jan 1 1992 hurricane. A category 3 (Saffer-Simpson) hurricane, with gusts up to 65m/s , which statistically should only happen every 200 years.

We descended to Helleskardet, then to the waterworks and then down to Kvalsvik before we parted. The 5,6km round trip took 1h:35m, including a 10-minute break on Muletua. It was very interesting terrain, and I'll be back for more.
