Auskjeret seen from the Hareid-Sula ferry |
Auskjeret is one of the most popular skiing mountains in the Sykkylven region, especially in spring. The mountain is much less visited in the summertime, which is a shame, given the magnificient views you will get from this top. During the best snow conditions, the ski descent is a pure delight, offering almost 900 vertical metes of "free flow".
The name should not be confused with a higher (approx. 1340m) mountain with the same name in the Stordal-Overøye region. The mountain is also known as "Ausekaret". Apparently, the shape of the mountain is meant to give you associations to the bailer you use when your boat is taking in water.
The normal route run from Sandfjøra/Fausaskiftet (at the end of Lake Nysætervatnet) and follows a direct line all the way to the summit. Some parts of this long hill is steeper than others, but by staying left you will avoid the steepest sections. Another route runs from Nysætra, at the outlet of Revsdalselva river, but is not described on this page. This mountain is well documented on the internet, so you can search for alternative routes. Auskjeret from Sandfjøra is a short trip, and you should consider making a round trip via Revsdalshornet and Aurdalsnibba.
You will find several trip reports from this mountain on tinderangling.net.

From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Bergen, and then highway RV60 (Stranda) to the Magerholm - Ørsneset ferry. This ferry runs quite often; every 20 minutes in the busy hours of the day. From Ørsneset, follow RV60 (Stranda) approx. 22,4Km and turn left towards "Fjellsætra". Follow the road past Fjellsætra approx 6Km until you reach the "Fausa/Orreneset" junction. Park here. Be early on sunny winter days.
The route
In short, the route runs straight up the mountain. Stay left when you feel the hill gets too step. A small plateau at approx. 940m may serve well for a break before you take on the final hill. You will find two cairns on the summit plateau. The northernmost is the main summit cairn.
