Trip report, July 29 2006

I had severe problems finding the motivation to go hiking this Saturday. Not only was I a bit grumpy, but the sea-fog covered the regional mountains, and only the lower mountains offered some kind of view. Long last, I managed to establish the necessary will, and got myself, the dog and the backpack in the car. Without a clear destination, I ended up on the Magerholm - Ørsneset ferry.

Of several potential targets, I chose Aurdalsnibba, although it was covered in fog. I had been to Sandvikshornet and Auskjeret in fine weather, and as such, I could "live with" the lack of summit views. I found the road to Sunndalen and was ready to hike 14:25PM.

It was yet another killing-hot day in July. The heat caused the dog to look two years older (and he's already old), and I decided to carry him up the lower section of the forest. I met two hikers on the way down, reporting zero views from the summit. Just below Kollane (above the tree-line), Troll began walking. As we entered the fog, a fairly large bird passed just ahead of us. I had just taken a picture of the fog (!) and had the camera ready. I managed to get a brief focus on the bird before it vanished in the fog. Post-research revelead that this was an immature Golden Eagle.

We reached the high point 15:45PM. We stayed up there for a while, hoping the fog would lift. By 16:00PM, it hadn't, and we headed down to the large cairns. By now, the fog had lifted some, and I could vaguely see Auskjeret. I didn't bother waiting for the fog to disappear, and began the descent approx. 16:15PM. We passed a couple of hikers on their way up, and were back at the car 17:00PM. By now, it seemed that most of the fog had passed, which hardly came as any surprise. Back at Ørsneset, I missed the ferry by one minute or less. This is happening more and more often, but fortunately, this ferry runs quite frequently.
