Together with Etne and Kvinnherad - Tysnes, Sveio, Stord, Fitjar, Bømlo and Austevoll form a region known as "Sunnhordland". In other words, the southernmost parts of Hordaland Fylke. While Etne and Kvinnherad will be presented on separate pages (due to the vast number of mountains), the rest of these kommuner are presented on this single page.
Stord is an
island in the Sunnhordland region, at the southwest end of
Hardangerfjorden, and is located roughly halfway between Bergen and
Haugesund. The entire Stord kommune has since 1997 status as
a Norwegian city. Leirvik - located at the southeast side of the island -
is the prominent town on Stord island. The island is divided between Stord and Fitjar kommuner. The highest mountain on the island - Mehammarsåta (749m) is located in Stord kommune. Interestingly enough, the kommune border is less than 400m away from the summit. The highest point in Fitjar is point 680m, located approx. 450m NW of Mehammarsåta. The natural access route from the north (Bergen) is via hwy E39 and the Halhjem (Os) - Sandvikvågen ferry. From the south (Stavanger/Haugesund), "Trekantsambandet" (bridge/tunnel) connects Stord to the mainland. Stord island offers good hiking terrain. A large portion of the island exceeds 400m elevation. In addition to the main plateau (Kattnakken - Mehammarsåta), a number of lower peaks can be found on the southwest side on the island. A number of marked trails make walking easy. And you can easily get to the high plateau through convenient mountain roads (which you need to walk). See the Kattnakken page for quick access to the southern mountains, and the Midtfjellet page for quick access to the northern mountains. Bømlo and Austevoll consist of a series of smaller islands located west and north of Stord island. Siggjo (474m) is the highest point in Bømlo kommune, while Loddo (243m) is the highest point in Austevoll kommune, located on Huftarøy island. Sveio is the southernmost kommune in Hordaland, bordering to Rogaland Fylke (as well as Etne and Odda). Trollvassnibba (432m) is the highest point in Sveio kommune. (I will add more info on Bømlo, Sveio and Austevoll later on) |

Below is the list of ranked kommune mountains, sorted by height. "Ranked" means mountains with a height >= 300m and with a primary factor >= 100m. I have chosen to include some of the mountains with primary factor < 100m in a separate table. Names and height originate from Statens Kartverk (M711)/Norgesglasset (20m contours) or Økonomisk Kartverk (part of Norgesglasset, 5m contours). Several mountains have a point higher than the trig. point marked on the maps. Note that if the high point of a mountain lies within another kommune, the mountain is listed under that specific kommune. If a mountain high point is shared by two kommuner, the mountain is listed under both kommuner.
