Trailhead - all 'M' routes

The trailhead for these routes is the Montana Youth Hostel. Montana offers accomodation and is a good base for visitors who would like to have easy access to the Ulriken massif. A map is available at the Montana web-site.

Find the "Montana" exit along road RV585 halfway between Haukeland Sykehus (hospital) and Landås (on top of a hill). Follow signs towards "Montana". There is no public parking near Montana, but normally one will find a place to park.

M1: Montana - Lægdene - Ulriken

Difficulty: Class 1
Exposure: None
Distance: Approx. 2,4Km
Time: Approx. 1 hour
Starting elev.: Approx. 170m
Vertical gain: Approx. 500m

Follow the forest road upwards and pass a gate. Go left at the first Y fork (approx. 600m from the gate) On top of the following hill, you see two benches. The forest road ends here. Continue straight ahead up the wide forest trail. Follow this trail until it makes a sharp right turn. The Lægdene trail begins at this turn, and is marked "Ulriken". The wide forest road continues to the right, also leading to Ulriken. See trail "M2".

The Lægdene trail runs straight up to the Ulriken tower. Long parts of the route have handrails. The trail is actually a long rock field, and after heavy rain, this trail is a creek. From the Ulriken tower, you see the 642m summit cairn 300m towards the east. There are several ways to get to this cairn. Easiest access from the south.

The Lægdene trail is the most traveled route to Ulriken. When the wind is strong, this route gives some shelter from the wind, but is more cumbersome than Langrinden (M2) and Korketrekkeren (M3)

M1.1: Montana - Langrinden - Ulriken

This is a variation to route M1 above. Follow the forest road from Montata. Go left at the first Y-fork. When you reach the two benches, leave the forest road and follow a trail that runs up to your left. This trail follows a ridge where you have the city in view all the way to the top. The trail is in general easier than the Lægdene trail (M1), but has a step above the forest which is a bit tricky in icy conditions. In dry conditions, you will also have to use your hands, but the step is very short. There is also a narrow passage immediately after this step. People with extreme fear of heights may find this passage a bit uncomfortable. The Ulriken "die-hards" swear to this trail. This route is more exposed to wind than the Lægdene trail, but far less wet after heavy rain.

M1.1 Scrambling

The Langrinden route (M1.1) runs past two distinct cliffs just above the forest. The lower cliff offers some interesting scrambling opportunities, rated class 4 (YDS). The handholds are plentyful, but the exposure is significant. The upper cliff (a rock ridge, to be more precise) is rated class 3 (YDS), and is less intimidating.

At the lower cliff, a vague path runs to the left (away from the main path). It is unclear where this path ends, but from this path, you have several opportunities for further steep scrambling.

M1.1.x: Other variations

The two benches described above denote a 4-way trail junction. The leftmost trail runs up Langrinden (M1.1). Further right (behind the benches), you can follow a forest trail, providing a shortcut to the Lægdene (M1) trail. Further right, there is another forest shortcut towards Lægdene, and far right, the main forest trail will take you to the Lægdene (M1) or Korketrekkeren (M2) trails.

M2: Montana - Korketrekkeren - Ulriken

Difficulty: Class 1
Exposure: None
Distance: Approx. 3,4Km
Time: Approx. 1,5 hour

Follow this trail all the way until it ends (along the way you have passed the M1 trail fork). Follow a trail to a trailsign. Go left. The trail is marked "Ulriken". Follow this trail upwards. The trail is wide and easy to follow.

At 480m elevation, there is another trail junction. Go straight ahead (the Landåseggen M2.1 trail forks to the left here). Follow the trail towards Ulriken tower. After a while, you will join the trail between Turnerhytten and Ulriken tower. Don't follow this trail. Instead, look for a path that runs directly up to the 642m high point.

M2.1: Montana - Landåseggen - Ulriken

Ref. trail M2; When you reach the trail junction at 480m elevation, turn left onto a smaller path that runs up the Landåseggen ridge. Pass a hut on the high ridge and choose between a path that runs on the west side of the plateau (with the city in view) or a path that runs slightly more to the east. If you aim for the 642m high point, follow the easternmost path. This path joins the trail between Ulriken and Turnerhytten hut. When you join this trail, look for a path that runs directly up to the 642m high point.

M2.x: Other variations

From the M2 route, you have access to other part of the Byfjellene massif. Just after the wide forest trail ends (350m elevation), the M2 route runs left (towards Ulriken). The other trail leads you towards Landåsfjellet. The second trail junction (480m elevation) will also take you to Landåsfjellet if you go right. At 540m elevation (above Korketrekkeren), you may turn right (signed junction) and follow "Indianerstien" towards Turnerhytten. At 600m elevation, you join the Ulriken - Turnerhytten trail. Going left takes you towards Ulriken. Going right takes you towards Turnerhytten and subsequently the famous "Vidden" trail towards Rundemanen and Fløyen.

M3: Montana - Hestekleiven - Ulriken

Difficulty: Class 1
Exposure: None
Distance: Approx. 2,3Km
Time: Approx. 1 hour
Starting elev.: Approx. 170m
Vertical gain: Approx. 500m

Follow the forest road upwards. Pass the gate and turn left behind the pidgeon shelters (before the forest road makes a right turn). Head up an open field (used to be a lit skiing hill). At the upper end of this field, follow a trail up the forest. At 330m elevation, this trail joins the trail from Bjørndalen (B1). Turn right and follow the trail upwards. The challenge is to make a distinction between the original forest trail and the newer (rough) bicycle trail. At 480m elevation, you join the Langrinden (M1.1) trail. Follow the ridge trail towards Ulriken tower and subsequently a path leading to the 642m summit cairn.
