Trollstolen seen from Blåtinden

Trollstolen seen from Blåtinden

Introduction

The combination of Trollstolen (The Troll chair) and Blåstolen (The blue chair) is a spectactular sight, when seen from highway E136 just northwest of the place Måndalen. Seen from the higher Prosten - Svartevasstinden - Trolltinden ridge, the two peaks stand out less spectactular, but they are still nice peaks!

The peaks are either visited from Måndalen or from Våge. This page describes a roundtrip route from Måndalen. The route is excellent for hiking, and less so for skiing. The forest above Måndalen is not great skiing terrain.

Once in the Trollstolen - Blåstolen region, you can easily include tops such as Stolsaksla (953m), Litleheikollen (933m) and Urhaugen (1064m). And less than 1Km west of the Trollstolen trailhead in Måndalen, you have the Kaldtinden / Grøntinden / Prosten trailhead.

Primary factor:

Trollstolen (Norge 1:50,000: 1141m, Økonomisk Kartverk: -, UTM 32 V 415611 6937555) has a primary factor of 371m towards the higher parent Prosten (1263m). The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 414430 6937614) is found between Trollstolen and Langfjellet. Ref. the Norge 1:50,000 map (20m contours), the saddle is within the range 760-780m, interpolated to 770m.

Blåstolen (Norge 1:50,000: 1111m, Økonomisk Kartverk: -, UTM 32 V 416664 6937364) has a primary factor of 221m towards the higher parent Trollstolen (1141m). The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 416199 6937154) is found between Trollstolen and Blåstolen. Ref. the Norge 1:50,000 map (20m contours), the saddle is within the range 880-900m, interpolated to 890m.

Urhaugen (Norge 1:50,000: 1064m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 1064m, UTM 32 V 417332 6936593) has a primary factor of 74m towards the higher parent Blåstolen (1111m). The defining saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 417097 6936763) is found between Urhaugen and Blåstolen. Ref. the Norge 1:50,000 map (20m contours), the saddle is within the range 980-1000m, interpolated to 990m.

Access

Locate the place Måndalen, approx. 20Km west of Åndalsnes. Locate the Måndalen valley road on the NORTH side of the river Måna. The road exit by highway E136 is approx. 39,2Km from the E39/E136 junction south of Vestnes.

Drive 600-650m up this road and turn right onto a smaller road. After 100m turn right. Find the road that runs up to a small group of cabins at 80m elevation. You can (probably) park there. This is however not the "official" road. There is a parallel road 70m to the south, but then you have to find parking among the houses. Instead of turning right after 100m (see above), continue straight ahead (west), and locate a forest road behind a long and distinct house. Either road will work.

The route

If you parked up by the cabins, walk 50-70m upwards, then cross (possibly over) a gate (which may be sealed). Follow a path until you join the forest road, coming up to your left. 150m later, the forest trail to Høgsetra (signed) begins.

Traverse the forest south of Hellehaugen before the forest trail turns northwest. At 510m elevation, turn left in a signed forest junction. After approx. 2Km (from the start of the forest trail), you reach the Høgsetra cabins.

The path along the river Tverråa runs from the uppermost cabin at Høgsetra. The path is a little vague at first, but becomes a distinct corridor once you reach the birch forest. If you're off track, traverse the entrance to the birch forest until you find the path.

Once out of the birch forest, aim directly for Trollstolen, and pick an ascent route. Ascending Trollstolen is class 2 (YDS) boulder terrain, but you can find some easy pitches to follow. Info in case of fog: Trollstolen summit has 4 cairns, two are small and two are larger. The two large viewpoint cairns are located on the northwest side of the summit plateau. The smaller cairns is found on the northeast side. The high point cairn is the cairn with no steep drop directly beneath.

Descend your asent route, or descend via Blåstolen and Urhaugen, all the way to Hellehaugen, where you can try to locate the path leading down to the junction at 510m elevation.

Route 2: Måndalen - Urhaugen - Blåstolen, via Hellehaugen

Exposure : No
Distance : Approx. 5Km to Blåstolen

Same access as for route #1. See above.

At 510m elevation, turn right in a signed forest junction. Continue on path up to the cabin on Sæbøhaugen. Go off-trail from here, and head up the ridge towards Hellehaugen.

From Hellehaugen, the terrain is obvious. You pass Urhaugen's 980m contour before ascending the final meters up to the top. There is no distinct cairn on Urhaugen. Descend Urhaugen to the west until the terrain gets less steep, and you can proceed on the rocky ridge towards Blåstolen. You will find a couple of cairns on Blåstolen. The main cairn has a container, which may hold a visitor register.

Descend your ascent route, or descend Blåstolen in the direction of Trollstolen, if you want an extra top, or in the direction of Tverråa, if you're heading home.
