Kvannskarhornet & Kolgrovhornet on skis, Feb 4 2012 |
To the main Kvannskarhornet/Kolgrovhornet/Storebøra page (maps, pictures, other trip reports) My route, as seen in Google Earth
With just a few hours available for mountain stuff this Saturday, I chose to go to Kvannskarhornet - one of the nearest mountain tops that I hadn't been to yet. Sure, this top is not on my Vanylven list of PF 100m tops, but this would be a nice trip, regardless of the primary factor... Arriving at Fiskå, I chose the same starting point as for Storebøra back in January 2009 - Fjellvegen. As there is no public parking at this trailhead, I was driving a bit back and forth - looking for a place to park. Then a man came approached me and asked me if I was the one that was here some years ago? He recognized my car, and since I also remembered him, I could confirm that I was indeed myself... We talked for a while, but since I was in somewhat of a hurry I had to get going, and by 11:21am, I was on my way up the forest road...
Up the forest road
I was very happy about the fact that I could ski from the car, and that the forest road had enough snow to allow me to descend on skis as well. On my way upwards, I was thinking about my friend Petter - who had taken a weekend trip from Bergen to visit some mountain tops in the Nordfjord region. "He's not very far away", I concluded for myself - knowing that Veten above Måløy was one of his targets. Then my mind went on about something else, but this is not the last about Petter and this forest road...
Fiskåbygda
Based on fresh tracks, I had one skier ahead of me. I chose to follow the tracks for a while, and it was evident that the skier was on his or her way to Vorkinna. At Borgnyhaugen, I sat course for Kolgrovhornet, watching the skier turn around in the final hill before Vorkinna summit. Too icy? Just south of Borgnyhaugen, I passed this charmin cabin...
A charming cabin
The trip up to Kolgrovhornet was quite windy, and by the time I reached the top (12:33pm), I only wanted to move on. But I took the time to stop for pictures, knowing I would regret it later if I didn't...
On top of Kolgrovhornet
The trip over to Kvannskarhornet was short and I reached the top 12:52pm. This top was just as windy, and if even if I would have the whole day to spend outdoors, I felt for heading down. Now!
On top of Kvannskarhornet
I was back at the trailhead 1:14pm, and ready to drive 4 minutes later. I had 12 minutes to reach the 1:30pm ferry from Koparneset, which I did - with a good margin. Halfway across the fjord, I took yet another picture of Syvdsalpane, knowing that I would keep on taking pictures of this beautiful massif, as long I live in this region...
Syvdsalpane
The next morning, I got a call from Petter. He had just skied Storebøra (!!) and reported that the wind was pretty violent up there, so now he was looking for a mountain lower than 1000 meters before driving back to Bergen (which is not a short drive!). He also told me that he had been driving up a forest road last night. and spent the night in the car on top of the road. This was the same road that I had been skiing (!!!) earlier in the day. I quickly drew two conclusions; a) the world is indeed small, and b) that Petter never ceases to surprise me... Based on his own map of Norwegian mountains with a high primary factor, I guided him in the direction of Volda and Koppefjellet. How his trip went, you can read about on his web-site (as soon as he posts his report)...
