Sollihornet (Lidahornet) from Krokevika, Jan 14 2012 |

On a day when Anne and me want a hike more than a ski-trip, the Vanylven mountains come in handy. Especially with the little amount of snow that we've had this winter. The Ørsta and Volda mountains could surely offer snow that could justify bringing skis, but this was not an option along the coastline. After studying the map, I noticed that I had only one PF 100m top left to do on the peninsula north of Syvdseidet, so I suggested to Anne that we should go to Sollihornet - aka Lidahornet - and she had no objections. After another look at map, we agreed to start from Krokevika - although there were other starting point candidates. I hiked Litlekrokhornet from Krokevika in Sep. 2009, so at least I knew the trailhead. Coming from Gurskøya, it was natural to take the Larsnes - Åram ferry, and after a short drive along Hakallestranda, we were on our way by 12:20pm.
Up Krokvikdalen
The path was easy to follow for the first twenty minutes, but then we lost it. We found it again a bit later and followed it all the way to Lake Krokedalsvatnet. The hike across the meadow was a bit boring, but at least I had the time to study my (steep) short-cut up to Høgenakken, from my hike to Litlekrokhornet in 2009. It really didn't seem that long ago. And relatively speaking, it isn't either...
Across the meadow
Arriving at Krokedalsvatnet, we had to decide if we wanted to head for the ridge leading to Olaliheida or the valley in which Nørdredalsvatnet is draining. We chose to head up the ridge and do a round trip. We had a short stop for lunch at the cabin by the lake. The cabin provided shelter from the cold wind and while I was chewing on my sandwich, I concluded that Storekrokhornet looks quite impressing from this angle!
A short stop by the cabin
We moved on and I looked at the time - 1:25pm. We did not have oceans of time in terms of daylight, but there was no reason to assume that we wouldn't be back before darkness fell upon us. And besides, we had flashlights. The ridge above the cabin was cumbersome, but the cumbersome part only lasted for 10 minutes. Then we could enjoy a ridge that had less snow the higher we came, but on the other hand - the wind increased proportionally to the elevation gain...
Windy ridge
We reached the top of Olaliheida 2:15pm, and we had Lake Olalidvatnet in front of us. The question was now - where was Sollihornet? The tops on the other side of the lake seemed too far away. I thought I remembered that Sollihornet was only 0,7-0,8km away from Olaliheida. Then we took another look at a very little prominent top to the northeast, and concluded that this had to be our target. 11 minutes later (at 2:26pm), Anne and I stood on top of Sollihornet and enjoyed the view towards the northern Vanylven mountains. Given the wind, it was apparent that we wouldn't stay there long...
On top of Sollihornet
We agreed to descend via Nørdredalsvatnet, and there was a lot more snow down there. We had come prepared - carrying snow shoes on our backpacks. This was a good time to wear them! After 10 minutes, one of my bindings broke. The other one broke last year. My Simle snow shoes fail to impress me...
With snow shoes on
Back at the meadow, the snow shoes were no longer needed. We followed the path down Krokvikdalen and returned to the trailhead 3:40pm - 3h:20m after heading out, and with plenty of time left until darkness. We were not so lucky with the ferry from Åram, and had to wait there for a good while. During this time, a cat without a tail fell completely in love with us...
