Norwegian Mountains, Sogn og FjordaneSlakkafjellet, Oct 23 2010To the main Slakkafjellet page (maps, route descriptions, other trip reports, etc.)
Winter had just come to Sogndal, but even though a lot of snow had fallen, it was not skiing conditions. One could just blow away the 10-20-30 (depending on the elevation) centimetres of snow, and find grass. At least, that was what the sheep did... This Saturday morning was not a particular good one. I was already overdue for a visit to the chiropractor, and I had a splitting headache. At first, a hike seemed completely out the question, but as the (beautiful) day progressed, I would rather be in pain on a mountain than being inside. I had already done most of the lower mountains around Sogndal, and had "saved" Slakkafjellet for a "weary day". It looked like an easy hike - just up along the power lines, and then through a small forest. Anne preferred a ski-trip higher up in the valley (where there was much more snow), so I went alone up to the Slakkafjellet trailhead and gathered my strengths.
I headed out 11:20am, and the plan was to follow the power lines all the way. Then I noticed a tractor road and decided to follow it. After a while, I came across a path that was a short-cut up to Flugheimshaugen. A flock of sheep wondered who this stranger was...
From Flugheimshaugen, I decided to stick with the power lines. I crossed a field and a couple of gates and stumbled on another tractor road. It was tempting to follow it, but I stayed true to my decision. After a long (and somewhat strenuous) plod, I reached the Slakken cabin, and treated myself with a short break and a nice view towards Sogndal.
I wasn't in any worse condition than before I started, and it seemed that I would reach this top. And when I finally moved out of the shadow and into the sunshine, everything just got 100% better. 400 meters away from Slakken, I decided to break away from the power lines and find my way through the forest. After a pleasant stroll through the forest, I reached the top of Slakkafjellet 12:50pm - 1h:30m after heading out. A small celebration was in order...
I spent a good while on top before heading back down. Just after passing Slakken, I discovered a path into the forest and chose to follow it. This path led me down to the tractor road above Flugheimshaugen. I was back at the trailhead 2pm. I still had a splitting headache, but after this very memorable hike, it was much easier to endure...
