Norwegian Mountains, Møre og RomsdalKvitneset - Flø, Nov 21 2010To the main Skolma/Sneldelida/Smørkinna/Veten page (maps, route descriptions, etc.)
The route
I did this route with mom
last summer, and now I wanted to show Anne the
very cool shoreline between Kvitneset and Flø on Hareidlandet island.
It was not the ideal time of the year to do this walk, and there was a lot
of ice on the mountains. But the rocks along the shore seemed dry, so we
decided to give it a try. We parked one car at Brandal and another at
Kvitneset. The plan was to hike to Ytreflø and return via Skolma
(636m).
Heading out from Kvitneset
The small ponds (in lack of a better word) along the shore were frozen, and they were both fun to "skate" and to look through. Anne said she could see crabs walk under the ice.
Sub-ice observations
This shore also offers some good opportunities for scrambling, and if one doesn't pay attention to time, this trip can get quite long... The ice wasn't only fun to slide on and look through, it also provided some true art of nature...
Art of nature
We left Kvitneset 11:23am, and it was almost 1pm when we reached the Skolmeura boulder field. As it would get fairly dark by 4pm, we better had to make some progress. I felt that we should be at the head of Ytreflødalen no later than 3pm, and we still had a lot of boulder to climb across. Route finding here can be time consuming, and we didn't always pick the easiest alternatives...
Interesting terrain!
Just before we were past Skolmeura, what shouldn't happen did happen; Anne stood on top on a huge rock, preparing to jump to the next. Then she slipped and fell backwards. Her backpack took away some of the impact, but then she fell in between the rocks and hurt her knee. I could hear her scream, and I feared the worst. On the other hand, in this situation a scream is better than no scream at all... It turned out that the rock she fell from was covered by ice. This was utterly strange, as this was the first time we saw ice on rocks. After the worst pain and nausea had passed, she felt that we could stick to the plan. But after a little while, it became evident that it would be impossible for her to ascend 600 vertical meters up to Skolma. This hike would end at Flø.
Anne, limping towards Flø
The question was now how we could get from Flø to Brandal. A taxi would surely be expensive. So I decided to call Erling Flø, whom I climbed Kjerringa together with in 2009. Erling lives at Flø, and after I had explained the situation, he said he could take us to Brandal. We reached Ytreflø 3:30pm, and 5 minutes later, Erling showed up. Anne had a stiff knee for a few days, but it healed good. It was a scary moment, and it's well worth to remind ourselves about mountain rule #2 - Don't fall! Rule #1 - Don't eat yellow snow was never a concern on this hike...
