Introduction

Skaphornet is the northern spur of the Sunndalsnipa massif, which is located just east of Eidsyrkja - the highest peak in the municipality of Volda. Skaphornet is normally visited from Høybakk at the foot of Sunndalen valley, then via Haralddalssætra, and this is the route described on this page.

The route from Høybakk runs via forest roads, forest paths and off-trail walking in easy terrain. There are no steep or airy parts on this route. In other words - Skaphornet is an easy mountain to reach.

The views are not far-reaching, but the Sunndalsnipa and Eidskyrkja massifs, as well as the string of tops on the north side of Austefjorden form a nice view in themselves.

Access

(all distances are approx. distances)

The nearest bigger city is Ålesund. From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Bergen/Volda to the ferry at Solavågen. Take the Solavågen - Festøya ferry, turn right at Festøy and follow highway E39 towards Ørsta (38,3Km). At the highway RV655/E39 junction in Ørsta, follow E39 9Km to the Folkestad/Lauvstad ferry junction in Volda. Follow highway RV651 through Volda to the Vikebygda/Fyrde roundabout just above the centre of Volda.

At the roundabout, take the first exit (right) and follow RV651 18,9km along Voldsfjorden/Austefjorden until you reach the Straumshamn/Viddal junction. Turn right (Straumnshamn) and follow RV651 250m. Turn left towards Sunndalen. Drive 400m up the road and turn left again just before a bridge. Follow this road 450m and turn right. Drive 1km up to Høybakk. You see a forest road going up to your left.

Find a place to park at Høybakk. You can also drive up the forest road, but it gets quite steep after a while.

From Høybakk, follow the Sunndalen forest road. After just 350m, you'll see a forest road going to the left. You now have two options;

a) Go left and follow the forest road which soon turns into a forest path. Cross the river on an old wooden bridge and follow the path up until you reach a newer forest road which ends right here.

b) Continue up the Sunndalen forest road and turn left onto another road after 900m. Follow this road 850m until it ends.

From the end of the newer forest road, follow a path that runs right of the Haralddalselva river. The path leads up to Haralddalssætra. At the cabins, turn left (east) and cross the river on a rocky bridge. Per June 2009, a vague path (marked with red ribbons) can be followed upwards. After 300m, this path can be difficult to follow, so prepare to continue off-trail from here. The direction should be obvious (up!) and as long as you find ways around the many cliffbands, the terrain is easy.

Skaphornet high point is marked by a few rocks. The viewpoint cairn is 30m to the northwest. A fallen trigonometric point is found 60m to the north.

Upon descent, consider following the northwest ridge until you get a good overview of the valley east of Fyrde. Then descend and set course for your ascent route.
