Introduction

Revsdalshornet is part of a mountain massif, fully enclosed by roads. This Sykkylven mountain region, defined by Storfjorden, Vellesæterdalen and Ramstaddalen is dominated by Urfjellet (1267m) and Auskjeret (1203m). Revsdalshornet is centrally located in this region, but falls into "the shadow" of higher neighbours.

Revsdalshornet connects directly to Aurdalsnibba (1126m) which in turn connects to Auskjeret. The normal access routes run from Sunndalen (west) and Nysæterdalen (east). The route from Nysæterdalen is described here (external link), while this web page describes the route from Sunndalen.

Revsdalshornet is perhaps one of the easiest 1000m mountains in Sykkylven. From Sunndalen (toll road), you follow a path from Sunndalssætra 330m (elev.) and to the top. The Nysæterdalen trailhead is slightly higher (350m). According to fjellinordvest.net, Nysæterdalen is actually Revsdalen, thus the name of the peak. Apparently, Statens Kartverk was given the wrong name of this valley.

Access

(all distances are approx. distances)

From Ålesund, follow highway E39 towards Bergen, and then highway RV60 (Stranda) to the Magerholm - Ørsneset ferry. This ferry runs quite often; every 20 minutes in the busy hours of the day. From Ørsneset, follow RV60 (Stranda) approx. 2,6Km and turn left towards "Ramstaddal". Follow this road 2,2Km, turn right onto an unsigned, paved road. Drive 150m and turn left in the upcoming junction, just after having crossed the river on a bridge.

Continue 600-650m and turn right onto a smaller, toll road (Sunndalsvegen). The self-served toll is 100m ahead, NOK 30,- for passenger cars per July 2007. Follow this road to its end (5,5Km). Find a place to park near the Sunndalssætra cabins.

Note that after 4,5Km on the Sunndalsvegen road, you pass the Aurdalsnibba trailsign, in case you want a roundtrip hike.

The route

From the Sunndalssætra cabins, follow a forest road/trail that starts from the uppermost cabins. Within a minute, another cabin appears. Cross two creeks after this cabin, turn left and follow a visible path upwards, along the creek.

In a while, the path crosses a meadow. Look for red paint on rocks or plastic on trees if you're in doubt of the direction ahead. You'll cross the powerline near 32 V 381982 6917072 (UTM).

After the meadow, the path switchbacks to the northeast. This section is quite visible. Rocks have been put in place so animals could walk this route. The path leads up to a mailbox at 32 V 382771 6917461 (UTM). Turn right and head southbound up Revsdalshornet north ridge. The section between 900 and 960m (elev.) is steep, but there is no exposure or any difficulties. The path switchbacks nicely up the ridge.

Pass several cairns near viewpoint 32 V 382957 6916550 (UTM) and set a southeast course for the summit, 300m away. The summit is marked by a couple of rocks. Descend your ascent route, or include Aurdalsnibba on your hike. Upon having descending Aurdalsnibba on the west ridge, it's only 1Km on road back to Sunndalssætra.
