Ellingsøya and the tops

Introduction

There cannot be many Norwegian tops around, where you get so much views for so little effort. The views from the Ellingsøya high point are simply astounding - an unbroken 360 degree view of beautiful fjords, coastal mountains, mountain ranges, ridges, aretes, sharp peaks and rounded tops. All this, for 250 vertical meters ascent (or less, dependent of your route).

There are not many trails outlined on the maps, and the ones described on this page may seem like a detour compared to an optimal route from trailhead to the top. But don't let this discourage you from visiting Myklebusthornet. It doesn't take long to reach the top anyway.

The name points to the place Myklebost south of this forest hill/coastal mountain. The suffix "hornet" (horn) is perhaps a bit .. bold, considering other "...hornet" mountains that truly deserve this proud suffix. Seen from the south, Myklebusthornet is nothing but a forest hill, although the north side is considerable steeper.

Note: This web site refers to this top as both Myklebosthornet and Myklebusthornet. This is because of various references on maps.

Vikanakken is located above the place Vik on Ellingsøya island. Just like its higher neighbour Myklebosthornet (329m), Vikanakken is a popular top. In 2007, the summit guestbook had approx. 550 signatures from January through July. The top is easily reached from Vik. First, on the forest trail between Vik and Volstad, then on a path to the top.

The views from Vikanakken is slightly obscured by some low trees. If you want really good views, extend your hike to include Myklebusthornet (a 4Km extra hike).

Kverveaksla (called "Fjellet" locally) is the westernmost hill on Ellingsøya island, and is only a short drive away from the city of Ålesund. Myklebosthornet - the highest point on the island - is more than twice the height of Kverveaksla, but Kverveaksla is still a good viewpoint. You reach the top on path within 15-20 minutes.

Rørene is another good viewpoint, located 1,6Km east of Myklebosthornet. It is easy to include this top if you visit Myklebosthornet from the north side (the sports field).

Primary factor:

Myklebusthornet (M711: 329m, Ø.K.: 329,09m, UTM 32 V 359968 6933164) has a primary factor of 329m, being the high point of Ellingsøya island.

Vikanakken (Norge 1:50,000: 211m, Økonomisk Kartverk: 211,46m, UTM 32 V 362780 6932774) has a primary factor of 63m, towards the higher parent mountain Myklebosthornet (329m). The saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 362394 6933061) is found just east of Vikanakken, on top of the forest road between Vik and Volstad. Ref. Norge 1:50,000 (20m contours), the saddle height is within the range 145-150m, interpolated to 148m.

Kverveaksla (M711: 143m, Ø.K.: 142,86m, 32 V 354849 6932639) has a primary factor of 131m towards the higher Myklebosthornet (329m). The saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 357059 6933182) is found west of Hovseidet. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is defined as a fixed point; 12,3m ~ 12m.

Rørene (M711: 295m, Ø.K.: 294,7m, 32 V 358392 6933447) has a primary factor of 72m towards the higher Myklebosthornet (329m). The saddle (approx. UTM 32 V 358764 6933255) is found between the two tops. Ref. Økonomisk Kartverk (5m contours), the saddle is defined within the range 220-225m, interpolated to 223m.

From Ålesund, follow highway RV659 northbound towards Vigra. Just after the first tunnel - Ellingsøytunnelen - pay toll (NOK 60,- for passenger cars, 1 person per Jan 2006) and turn immediately left towards Ellingsøya.

Follow this road 5,9Km (turn right towards "Vatne" in a roundabout after 2,3Km) and turn left when you see the "Myklebust" sign. 3,8Km after the roundabout. Drive 200m up a smaller road and locate a road to your left, marked "Myklebusthornet". Find parking nearby, or down by the main road.

If you want to start at a higher elevation, turn left on the road mentioned above, and drive 600m upwards, providing no signs say it's not allowed. The road is rather steep, and it is not recommended to drive under icy conditions. After 600m, you reach the top of the road (140m elevation). The road continues down on the other side, to Liamyra, but park here. You see the "Myklebusthornet" trailsign on a tree.

The route

From the parking at 140m elevation, go straight ahead (north) and follow the forest trail approx. 700m before you turn left onto a less visible forest path (the forest trail continues eastbound) that is marked "Myklebusthornet". Before this junction, you have passed one trailsign already.

The path you are on will lead you out of the forest, onto Myklebusthornet's east ridge and join the path from Sperre. Follow the path up to the first top, marked as 320m on the 1:50,000 map and 317,7m on Økonomisk Kartverk.

From point 320m, follow a visible path along the north side of the ridge, 750m down-and-up-to Myklebusthornet's high point, marked by a trig. point. Descend your ascent route, or descend off-trail to Lake 121m (Liamyra) and subsequently, the trailhead.

On both tops, you may find a visitor's register inside the containers. Both registers state you are on Myklebusthornet. Per Jan 2006, the high point register was titled "Myklebusthornet/Stanga" (Stanga = the pole), which probably relates to the trigonometric point).

Route 2: Sports field (north) - Rørene - Myklebosthornet (all seasons)

Follow this road 2,3Km to a roundabout and turn left towards Volstad. You are now driving on the north side of the island. After 3,5Km, you have just passed a sports field (idrettsplass) and you have parking on your left-hand side and a forest road on your right-hand side. Park here.

The route

Follow the forest road 170m until you reach an intersecting road. Turn right and head towards the sports field, where you turn left onto the main forest road. Follow this road all the way to the Rørene - Myklebosthornet pass (223m elevation).

Turn left for a quick hike up to Rørene (295m). Then head back down to the pass and continue up Myklebosthornet's west ridge. The distance from the pass to the top is approx. 1,3Km.

Descend your ascent route, or continue eastbound to the Vikanakken - Myklebosthornet pass, then descend northbound to Volstad and follow the main road back to the trailhead (3,5Km from Volstad).
