Mefjellet
Today I took the (relatively) long drive from Gurskøya to the beautiful Norddal region to ski Mefjellet. This mountain seemed like a good option taking the strong wind in the mountains into consideration. It's been a good while since I was in this part of the county and I enjoyed passing all the mountain tops that I've been to in the past. After passing Sylte, I took the Selbostad exit and drove up to Hauge. I spoke to some locals there and learned where I ought to go in order to get to Mefjellet. I was pleased to find a tractor road (at least I think there was some sort of road below the snow) up to Nysætra.
On the road to Nysætra
At Nysætra I met 4 skiers coming down the mountain in a good phase. I assumed that the mountain offered some mighty fine skiing, but that turned out to be a false assumption. Above Nysætra, I soon got the summit in view and saw that the wind was blowing quite fierce up there. The snow changed character and was now hard. So far, Karma was having a mighty good time...
Karma celebrating life below Mefjellet
The wind got stronger the higher we got and the gusts were not of the pleasant sort. Karma suggested that we should turn around but followed willingly when I explained that turning around was not an option. Yet... As we passed 1000m elevation, I was not confident that we ought to reach this peak today. Karma was struggling with the gusts that carried snow and ice but after seeking shelter between my legs she found new motivation in-between the gusts... We left Hauge 12:40pm and reached the summit 1:45pm and seeked immediately shelter behind the cairn. That didn't help much because of the "turbulence" but I managed to take a couple of pictures before we headed back down.
Hostile conditions on Mefjellet
The descent to Nysætra was cumbersome as I don't have the skills or equipment for this type of snow - for the most part hard but with surprises here and there... But from Nysætra, the descent was totally enjoyable. Instead of following the road, I took short-cuts and if Karma hadn't got enough exercise already, she definitely got it trying to follow me down the forest... At 2:14pm, we were back at the trailhead. As it had been a relatively short trip I decided to hike Melshornet on Hareid on the way home. We were back down from Melshornet just as it got dark. A long day on the road and in the mountains had come to an end...
