Norwegian Mountains, Sogn og FjordaneKaupangsholtane, Nov 14 2010To the main Kaupangsholtane page (maps, route descriptions, other trip reports, etc.)
This weekend was dedicated to cosy forest walks. The day before, Anne and me had a nice round trip across Smørhovden and saw a stout. Today, we decided to visit Kaupangsholtane, but rather than following the obvious forest roads and paths, we agreed to ascend the east ridge off-trail from sea level. I really like the forests above Sognefjorden - open and with lots of cool features. We also invited Knut Rydgren, who in turn invited Åge Vebostad and all of a sudden, we were four. We picked up Knut and met Åge at Kaupanger. I was trusted with the assignment of finding a nice forest route, which meant that it would get steep...
The steep route involved climbing the root of a huge tree, and in the process I released a fairly large rock. I was able to yell down to the others before it came tumbling down in a fast speed and with brute force. It's good to keep alive the important rock! rock! rock! signal... The rest of the ascent proceeded without any form of drama and we reached the Kaupangerholten viewpoint 12:38pm - 45 minutes after heading out. The forest was just as enjoyable as I had imagined to be, and professor Knut will probably come to study the moss...
The goal was the high point and we moved on. A marked forest path took us to a forest road and then there were forest paths and forest roads everywhere! What a most excellent recreational area! Had I lived in the vicinity, then I would have (extensively) used this area for hiking, biking, running, skiing and I would probably get myself a dog to walk here, too...
Hiking on Kaupangsholtane
After a 3,5km hike, we reached the high point - 1:17pm - 1h:24m after heading out. The high point was not marked in any way, and there was another forest top 175 meters to the east. But as this top was marked on the map, we nominated it as the Kaupangsholtane high point and had lunch.
For the most part, we followed different paths and roads back in the direction we came. Then we followed a forest road down to Hamnen, from where we followed a vague path back to the trailhead. The entire hike (8,2km) took approx. 3 hours. It was a very nice walk (with good company!), and Anne and me had now visited all the tops on the Fimreitehalvøya peninsula; Storehaugfjellet (1173m), Lingesetfjellet (1002m), Snaueggi/Fimreiteåsen (770m), Holsåsen (590m) and Kaupangerholtane (423m).
