On our way home from our one-week summer vacation in northern Norway, our friends Hilde and Trond Arne invited us to spend the weekend with them on Jøa island - where Trond Arne and his family is from. This turned out to be a very memorable stay, where we had very nice hikes, witnessed beautiful nature and met generous people who treated us like family from the very start. We arrived on the island on the sunny July 20. After being well received and installed on the family farm at Holvika by Hilde and Trond Arne, we took the trip to Moldvikvatna where the rest of the family had gone fishing. But first, we were to stop by Moldvikfjellet - the highest point on the island. What a way to start the weekend! Trond Arne knows me too well...
Moldvikfjellet and Moldvikvatna
At a pass at 200m elevation, Hilde continued towards the lake to join the others, while Trond Arne, Anne and me continued up Moldvikfjellet. At 4:29pm, Anne and me had "bagged" our first Jøa top and we had just arrived on the island!
On Moldvikfjellet
We then headed down to the lakes and joined Hilde, her and Trond Arne's kids, Trond Arne's mom, his brother and family. And not to mention Boss - the family dog. I was completely blown away, as I felt Boss was a spitting image of my former and beloved partner Troll. And I was almost willing to accept that Boss understood...
Being so close to Einarskardfjellet, I just had to take a trip up to the top. I was back 17 minutes after heading out. A quickie. No one found it odd that I had to go up there too. I guess my reputation is preceding me.. Before wrapping up at the lakes, we spent some time scrambling on the rocks. Trond Arne est loco and did stuff I would never try without a rope. I take a bow... On the way back to Holvika, we stopped by the amazing Tomtvollen - mainly developed by Trond Arne's father and the family. It's not only children's paradise, grown ups can have great fun here too!
Tomtvollen
As much as I like mountain tops, the highlight of the day was still the afternoon boat trip. At first, we were strollin' in the direction of Faksdal while looking out for the local eagle...
Pål Magnus and Trond Arne is looking for the eagle
At last we spotted the eagle, and Trond Arne threw out a fish to maximize the photo conditions for the very eager photographer (me). But the eagle didn't take the bait and sat firmly up in a tree, watching the humans sail on. Even so, it was a very memorable experience...
The eagle
The whole boat trip was pure magic from its beginning to its end. The scenery, the colors, the light...
Magic boat trip
Eventually, we ended up at Faksdal where we had a very nice evening. Yes, I drank a beer (or two), and yes, I will probably do it again. Sorry...
At the Faksdal pøbb
Back at Holvika, I scored a bonus point in Trond Arne's "book of points" by sticking my hand through a hole, exposing it to a (literally) picky hen and obtaining my own egg for breakfast. A great, great first day on Jøa island had come to its end... |
