Anne Rudsengen and me dedicated this weekend to get to know the Nordfjordeid mountains. We met in Nordfjordeid on Saturday morning and the first point on the agenda was a bike trip up to Høgefjellet. At Lote, we met up with Lise Grønbukt, who wanted to come along for this trip (this autumn, Lise and her husband Ove joined us on a most excellent trip to Hjelmen). Anne and myself occasionally take our bikes for a ride. Lise is in a altogether different league, and does things like biking from the North Cape to the West Cape. Besides, Høgefjellet (or Sagtendene as Lise says) is her local mountain. Anne and me were in for a hard day... We parked our cars 60 meters above Lote, and headed out 10:12am. Biking uphill without having warmed up, is simply not something I can do anymore without getting severe back pain, and today was not an exception. As we arrived at Lotsstøylen (430m) at 10:57am, I was in agony. Anne looked "sunburnt" and Lise didn't seem to take much notice of the uphill so far...
We still had about 600 vertical meters to go, and it was clear that this would be hell day. I could bike approx. 1 minute before my back muscle was out of oxygen. Getting off the bike for 10 seconds was enough to move on for 1 more minute. After a while, the road became so steep that our bikes were stalling. Even Lise had to get off the bike on one occasion. After a lot aggravation, the summit tower finally came into sight. Morale was rising, and Anne and me could begin to enjoy the mountain road along the summit ridge and the great views. Lise was way ahead of us, and I suspected her of going in circles, just to be nice...
We arrived on the summit 12:10pm - approx. 2 hours after leaving Lote. This was a new playground to me. I recognized all of the Sunnmøre peaks to the north, and the most distinct peaks in the other directions, but there were quite a number of tops that could not account for. Something to look forward to when the summit panoramas came out of the stitching box. Man, what a viewpoint!
After having become familiar with the summit of Sagtendene, it was time for the big bonus - a 1000 vertical meters descent on bike. As Anne had hardly any brakes left, we took it nice and easy down to Lotsstøylen. Then Lise and me let the wheels roll down to the trailhead - which we reached 12:47pm - 23 minutes after leaving the summit.
Descending Høgefjellet
From the trailhead, we biked the 1,5km up to Lotsberg, to have coffee with Lise and Ove. After a nice stay at Lotsberg, and meeting a beautiful cat named Bill Lotsberg Grønbukt (!), Ove joined us for a hike to Naustdalskammen. Report to follow.
