I had a strong urge to visit a higher top than Sukkertoppen on this fine last day of May. I decided to hike Skjerdingen. A visit to Blåskjerdingen would be a bonus. I would see how the hike turned out. I expected to carry the dog all the way to the top. A good workout for me, and leisure life for the dog.

I left the trailhead in Vatnedalen 17:57PM, and kept a steady pace up the mountain. I passed the cairn at 580m 18:31PM, after a half-hearted attempt on reaching it within half an hour. I did this hike one year ago (May 25) and even if it was more snow on the mountain back then, the amount of snow was fairly comparable. Up in the boulderfield, I came across a grouse, obviously trying to lead me away from .. something. This made her an easy photo target, but she knew how to maintain the distance.

I reached Skjerdingen 19:20PM. 850 vertical meters in 1h:20m wasn't too bad, considering I was carrying a dog, the fact that it was still a hot day and that I had spent at least 5 minutes trying to get some good pictures of a grouse. A group of 4 hikers were scattered around on Blåskjerdingen and Skjerdingen. I decided to visit Blåskjerdingen, slightly curious how the steep route would be with a dog on my back.

The descent to the saddle was trivial. I then waited a minute for 2 young hikers coming down the steep hill from Blåskjerdingen. They were eyeballing my backpack in a very discreet manner. The ascent to Blåskjerdingen was much easier this time, and the akward backpack was not an issue. However, once on the ridge, I decided to take the easiest route to the top.

The time was now 19:34PM, and I was standing on Blåskjerdingen, 1069m. I took one more round of pictures before I headed back down. I passed the other group before they had left the Skjerdingen plateau, and within minutes, they were long gone. This fast pace across boulder did my feet no good, and this hike was probably the main reason why I had to spend two weeks in June with an inflammation in my left foot.

I let Troll out of the backpack at 700m elevation, and he walked down from there. We were back at the trailhead 20:45, approx. 1 hour after leaving Skjerdingen.
